In her teenage years, Perry found a Queen record with her friend, "and the heavens opened and saved me. From then on, they have been my biggest influence." In an article for Blender Magazine, Perry stated she wasn't "a typical Christian", mentioning that she had done "lots of bad things" during her adolescence.

Bush was born in Pasadena, California. She is the only child of Maureen, a photography studio manager, and Charles William Bush, an advertising and celebrity photographer. Bush is of Italian descent. She graduated from Westridge School for Girls in 2000 in Pasadena, California.
